Wait, wait, don\u2019t answer that. How about let\u2019s do it on purpose! That\u2019s right, ask yourself, multiple times a day, \u201cWhat am I thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because the answers may surprise you! Oops, I just had a negative thought. Oops, I just thought about skipping my exercise scheduled for today.\u00a0 Oops, I just thought about one of my fears and gave it energy to grow. Oops, I haven\u2019t focused on this assignment that\u2019s due, and I\u2019m over here browsing Facebook now. How did I let that happen?<\/p>\n<p>And why is it important to observe my thoughts? In the <em>Master Key System,<\/em> Haanel tells us why. \u201cThe cultivation of attention is the distinguishing characteristic of every successful man or woman, and is the very highest personal accomplishment which can be acquired.\u201d (6-19)<\/p>\n<p>I LOVE the sound of that. \u2013 being successful; highest personal accomplishment. Yep, that\u2019s what I want when I grow up. And all I have to do is pay ATTENTION? Hmm, that should be easy.<\/p>\n<p>Oops, not according to a study Leon Watson wrote about in the UK Telegraph, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/science\/2016\/03\/12\/humans-have-shorter-attention-span-than-goldfish-thanks-to-smart\/\">\u201cHumans have shorter attention span than goldfish, thanks to smartphones.\u201d<\/a> Watson shares that, \u201cThe results showed the average human attention span has fallen from 12 seconds in 2000, or around the time the mobile revolution began, to eight seconds. Goldfish, meanwhile, are\u00a0believed to have an attention span of nine seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-595 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journeyofaday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/11\/boattexter-300x187.png\" alt=\"boattexter\" width=\"551\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Okay, so I\u2019ll have to practice thinking and concentrating to get my brain focused and working on my own success. Haanel also gives us some advice on how. \u201cThis power of attention can be more readily understood by comparing it with a magnifying glass in which the rays of sunlight are focused; they possess no particular strength as long as the glass is moved about and the rays directed from one place to another; but let the glass be held perfectly still and let the rays be focused on one spot for any length of time, the effect will become immediately apparent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-596 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journeyofaday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/11\/magnifying-glass.jpg\" alt=\"magnifying-glass\" width=\"181\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journeyofaday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/magnifying-glass-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.journeyofaday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/magnifying-glass.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo with the power of thought; let power be dissipated by scattering the thought from one object to another, and no result is apparent; but focus this power through attention or concentration on any single purpose for any length of time and nothing becomes impossible.\u201d (6-20)<\/p>\n<p>Nothing becomes impossible.
